SPOTLIGHT ON: EMERALD THE BIRTHSTONE FOR MAY
JEWELLERY FOR MAY BIRTHDAYS, PRETTY VINTAGE STYLE AND 55TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES.
There is a certain prerequisite for sophistication when it comes to wearing the emerald.
It is a gemstone that has adorned the necks and hands of some of the most famous women in the world. From Elizabeth Taylor’s necklace, to Jackie Kennedy’s engagement ring – like the wearers themselves, the jewellery also made history.
A consistent presence throughout history
Aside from the stone’s admirers, the emerald itself has an incredibly rich history, with records dating back as far as 1650 B.C
The green emerald represents rebirth, and because of this was dedicated to the ancient Roman’s goddess, Venus, due to her association with the reproductive forces of nature.
It is said to bring its wearer foresight, good fortune and youth. And the name ‘emerald’ comes from the Greek word ‘smaragdos’ which is a term applied to many types of green stone.
Most emeralds are found inside a form of shale rock, which has undergone recrystallization through changes of pressure and temperature in the environment, with most quality emeralds mined in Columbia.
Its striking green colour is thought to come from the presence of chromium and/or vanadium which replaces some of the aluminium in the beryl mineral’s structure.
What the May birthstone means to you
The emerald represents 55 years of marriage, so if you have reached that incredible milestone, an emerald piece from the Goldsmiths jewellery collection will make the perfect gift.
This rich green coloured gemstone complements both white and yellow metals beautifully.
